The Crossing, 1854

The latest work is a heritage piece. Following my research into wool and artists working with woollen blankets, I am creating a heritage blanket of my own.

My family on both sides emigrated to the Scottish Borders from County Meath in Ireland around the mid 1800s. Looking at why they left the beautiful green land to come across to the mill town of Galashiels, how they felt on that journey across the Irish Sea and what met them at their destination?

Looking at maps of both countries, using mark-making techniques and slow stitch, embroidery and machine stitch with screen print added, a body of work is in process.

The cyanotype process has been used on hand-knitted cotton yarn and old photographs.

Music written by Irish/American, Liz Carroll, ‘Lament For the First Generation’ was provided by the Riverside Fiddle Learners Group and the Hillfoots Sessions Group.
