The Clockwinder

A reverse applique artwork using vintage lace, onion dyed backing cloth and cyanotype fabric with clock design and sashiko stitching, both machine and hand.

The idea for the artwork came from a reverse applique piece I had created in HND year 2. I sketched the clocks I had which were beautiful art pieces in their own right.

I wanted a large cyanotype piece and put my images onto acetate to cyanotype. However I had to join them as the acetate was not large enough. This created a stripe I used as part of the grid design but was never happy with.

The cyanotype fabric was stitched - hand stitch sashiko and machine stitch mock-sashiko by putting a thick thread on top and same colour thread to fabric on bobbin in the hope it looked as if a space was created. As I did not need the thicker Sashiko thread for holding fabric together merely for aesthetic, it worked well.
