The Crossing, 1854
‘The Crossing, 1854’ is being exhibited as part of the UHI Perth Graduate Showcase 2026.
It is the memory of ancestors being displaced from Ireland and relocating to Galashiels in the Scottish Borders. Using Gaelic words and traditional music, it explores the feelings around this crossing, for a family not knowing what and where they are travelling to. Irish Gaelic ‘Cumha’ and Scottish Gaelic ‘Cianalas’ have no English equivalent words, and both convey profound longing for homeland.
Inspired by wool in contemporary art, this blanket is hand-embroidered with wool thread on wool fabric.
The ethereal, old quality of the cyanotype prints uses the process on hand-knitted cotton yarn.
Music is provided by learners in a community setting.
